What cold process soap actually is
Every true bar of soap starts the same way, with oils and a lye solution. Cold process is the method where we combine those two at low temperature and let them do the work themselves, rather than cooking the batch with outside heat. When oils and lye meet, a reaction called saponification begins, and over the next several weeks it turns those raw ingredients into soap and natural glycerin.
That word, lye, makes some people nervous, so here is the honest version. Lye (sodium hydroxide) is the ingredient that makes soap soap. There is no such thing as a real bar of soap made without it. What matters is that saponification uses it up. In a properly made, properly cured bar, the lye is fully converted, and what is left in your hands is gentle, glycerin-rich soap. Being straight about that is more useful than pretending soap makes itself.
The ingredients we start with

Here is roughly how a batch comes together in our Mapleton kitchen.

We bring the batch to trace. The oils and lye solution are combined and blended until the mixture thickens slightly to a pudding-like state soap makers call trace. That is the signal that saponification is underway and the batch is ready for the good part.
We add scent and character. At trace we fold in the fragrance and any natural touches for a given bar, whether that is a swirl of color, a dusting of botanicals, or the oats in an oatmeal bar. This is where a batch stops being chemistry and starts being a specific Wild Bear scent.
We pour, insulate, and wait. The soap goes into molds and rests for a day or so while the reaction finishes and the loaf firms up. Then we unmold and cut it into bars by hand, which is why no two bars are ever quite identical twins.
We cure for four to six weeks. This is the patience part. Fresh-cut bars are set on racks to cure for about a month or more. During the cure, extra water evaporates and the bar hardens, so it lasts longer in your shower and lathers better. There is no shortcut here, and we do not take one.
