Keep the bottle: how to refill your car freshener instead of replacing it

One Wild Bear Market refill bottle re-scents your car freshener about 3.5 times, roughly $4 per fill. Here is how to refill it, step by step.

A hand uses a dropper to refill a Tropic Like It’s Hot glass car freshener beside its matching refill bottle and detached wooden lid.

Our car fresheners start the same way everything else here does. A small batch of phthalate-free fragrance oil, blended in Mapleton, Utah, poured into a little glass bottle with a wooden lid. Clean ingredients are usually the reason someone tries one. The scent is the reason the bottle is still hanging in the car four months later.

Then one day it goes quiet. The oil is gone, the wood has given up what it was holding, and the bottle itself is still perfectly good.

That is the entire reason we make car freshener refills. You already own the bottle. You do not need another one. You just need the scent back.

What a car freshener refill actually is

A Wild Bear Market car freshener refill is a bottle of the same fragrance oil that went into your freshener the first time, packaged with a dropper so you can put it back where it belongs. Each refill is $13.99, and one bottle re-scents your reusable car freshener about 3.5 times. That works out to about $4 per fill.

One thing worth being blunt about, because it is the question we get most: a refill is oil only. The hanging glass bottle and its wooden lid are not included, and they are sold separately. If you do not own one of our fresheners yet, start with a car freshener rather than a refill. The refill is the second purchase, not the first.

The math, in plain numbers

We would rather show you the arithmetic than tell you it is a good deal.

  • A single car freshener is $7.49. In our mix and match offer, any three are $18.99, which is about $6.33 each.
  • A refill is $13.99 for about 3.5 fills, or about $4 per fill.
  • That is roughly 47 percent less per fill than buying a new freshener on its own, and roughly 37 percent less than the three-pack unit price.

Put another way: bringing a scent back 3.5 times by buying new fresheners at $7.49 would run you about $26. One refill bottle does the same work for $13.99. Three refills come to $41.97, which clears our free shipping threshold of $40 on its own.

The value is the offer here, which is why we did not launch refills with a discount. The price is already the point.

How to refill your car freshener, step by step

The process takes about a minute. Do it over a paper towel or a hard surface, not over your upholstery.

  1. Start with an empty freshener. Let the bottle run dry rather than topping it off partway. You will get a cleaner, truer scent, and you will know exactly how much oil the bottle takes.
  2. Unscrew the wooden lid from the empty Wild Bear Market car freshener and set it somewhere it will not roll away.
  3. Add oil with the dropper, leaving enough room at the top to replace the lid securely. Do not fill to the brim. The lid needs somewhere to sit.
  4. Screw the lid on tightly and wipe any oil off the outside of the bottle.
  5. Tip the bottle briefly, one to two seconds, so the oil reaches the wooden lid. Then return it upright and hang it back up.

That last step is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters most. The wood is what actually diffuses the scent into your car. A dry lid on a full bottle will smell like almost nothing. Give the wood a moment to drink, and the scent shows up.

Store the rest of the refill upright, capped, out of direct sun, and out of reach of children and pets.

What refilling saves besides money

The glass bottle and the wooden lid are the durable parts of a car freshener. They are also the parts that usually end up in the trash when the scent runs out, which has always struck us as backwards.

One refill bottle does not change much in the world on its own. But it is the difference between one bottle doing a year of work and four bottles doing the same job. It is the same thinking behind our solid dish soap, where you keep the jar and replace the bar. Keep the durable thing. Replace the part that gets used up.

The honest comparison

Refills are not the right answer in every case, so here is where the alternatives genuinely hold up.

Buying a new freshener instead. Sometimes this is the better call. If you want to try a scent you have never smelled, or you want three at once for three different cars, the three for $18.99 offer is a better way in than a refill. Refills are for scents you already know you love.

Generic refill oils. You can find fragrance oil cheaper per ounce elsewhere, and if all you want is volume, that is a real option. The tradeoff is that most of them will not tell you what they require of their fragrance, including whether it is phthalate-free. Ours are phthalate-free and contain nothing on the California Prop 65 list, and we will tell you what is in a bottle if you ask.

Vent clips and cardboard trees. Cardboard trees are genuinely cheap and they work for a couple of weeks. Vent clips push scent hard because your vent heats them, which is great on day one and less great by week three. Neither is refillable, so the disposal is designed in. Our bottle is designed the other direction, to be kept.

Which scent to bring back

This is the part that decides the purchase, honestly. Most of our car freshener scents now have a matching refill, and these are the ones people come back for:

  • Tropic Like It's Hot: sunshine, palm trees, and not a single responsibility in sight.
  • Coconut Lime: a tropical sunset, creamy coconut kissed by juicy pineapple and a warm amber glow.
  • Sand & Sea: a weathered beach hideaway, salty sea mist softened by floral breezes and sandy woods.
  • Midnight Leather: a midnight drive in a leather interior, deep and smoky with a warm darkness to it.
  • Sugar Bear: a sugared citrus breeze, zesty grapefruit and bergamot with tart lemon, cool mint, and a crisp green finish.
  • Coastal Linen: fresh linens in a coastal breeze, crisp ocean air with a floral softness and warm, woody depth.
  • Saffron Cedarwood: rich saffron threaded through warm cedar, with a spicy undertone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I refill a car freshener?

Let the bottle run empty, unscrew the wooden lid, use the dropper to add oil while leaving room for the lid to seat, screw the lid back on tightly, wipe the outside of the bottle, then tip it for one to two seconds so the oil reaches the wood before hanging it upright.

How many refills do I get from one bottle?

About 3.5 fills from a $13.99 refill, which comes out to about $4 per fill. A new car freshener is $7.49 on its own, so refilling costs roughly half as much per fill.

Is the glass bottle included with a refill?

No. A refill is fragrance oil and a dropper. The reusable hanging glass freshener and its wooden lid are sold separately, so a refill only makes sense if you already own one of our fresheners.

What if I want to try a different scent?

Try a new freshener. Refills are for the scent you already love and know you will keep coming back to. If the new one becomes a favorite too, pick up its refill as well, and you have two favorites to rotate between.

Does every scent have a refill?

Not yet. Most of our car freshener scents have a matching refill today, and we add more as we go. If your scent is not there, the refill collection is the page to check.

What if the scent is not right when it arrives?

Every order is covered by our 100% Scent Satisfaction Guarantee. If a scent is not right for you, we will replace it or refund it, no questions asked.

Keep the one you love going

Christina and Justin started Wild Bear Market in 2019 selling cold-process soap at craft fairs around Utah, and what has stayed constant since is that we make things we would keep using ourselves. A bottle you refill instead of replace is about as close to that idea as a product gets. You can read the rest of that story on our about page.

So if there is a quiet little glass bottle hanging in your car right now, it is not finished. Find your scent in the car freshener refills collection, give the wood a minute to drink, and get your drive back.
